MOVIE REVIEW GOLDEN DOOR: A Modern Fable

With an original mix of provocatively authentic visuals, the new movie, Golden Door, written and directed by Emanuele Crialese, turns the classic tale of coming to America into a soulful experience. This romantic fable takes audiences into the heart of the quintessential American diaspora, as one man, driven by his dreams confronts shocking realities on his journey in search of a new world. On a perilous steamship crossing from his Sicilian village, the widower Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) encounters a beautiful and mysterious Englishwoman, Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg)--and the Old World collides with the New as an unexpected love story unfolds. Once they reach the halls of Ellis Island, Salvatore and Lucy stop at nothing to make it through the golden door to the America of their imaginations.

Golden Door was recently reviewed by several members of the Washington D.C. Italian American community at the Motion Pictures Association. Reviews were generally highly positive. Many noted that it touched on the universal theme of immigration, which is just as powerful today as during the turn of the nineteenth century, when the country witnessed massive waves of immigrants from Italy. One reviewer noted, however, that the essence of the film was its “beautiful cinematography and its special effects with surrealistic images.” Golden Door opens in New York this month, and in the Washington D.C. area in June.•
